TEAMS
TIME COMMITMENT: MONTHLY MEETINGS
TEAMS is a STEM competition which consists of three stages: an essay, a multiple choice exam, and an engineering challenge. Each year, MICDS sends three teams to represent the Upper School in the February event. Browse through their website for information on essay prompts, categories, and monthly challenges!
If you're interesting in joining or have any questions, you can contact the faculty sponsor, Dr. Graf at egraf@micds.org, or the team captains, Nigina Aripova and Emma Scally at naripova@micds.org or escally@micds.org.
Notes from Nigina, 2019 and 2020 Captain:
"TEAMS was my first STEM activity at MICDS, so I was pretty nervous when I first started, but I quickly eased up. I was extremely lucky to have been in such an amazing and hardworking group of people! Everyone always brought their best and unique ideas, so we just worked to find ways to blend them. Plus, the guiding question for the essay was really interesting: it asked us to imagine an AI advancement and describe both its strengths and shortcomings. Our team wrote about an AI soldier and quite honestly, the research on this topic was fascinating. Furthermore, our engineering challenge was super cool too, we had to build a machine that would be able to pick a teddy bear up, flip and guide him towards a specific location and land him on there with his head up. Through these experiences, I made several friendships, learned about what it means to be both a captain and a teamplayer, and further sparked my interest to pursue STEM in the future."
TEAMS members visited the St. Louis Zoo to research for their essay.
